PC [BUG] Removing Audio Device in use by Stardew Valley causes it to freeze

As the title says, if the audio device that Stardew Valley is using is removed then the game will freeze (maybe the next time it wanted to play audio? unsure). At the time I was playing multiplayer as a guest (if that changes anything).

This is on the latest build for Steam (as of the 24th of December).

I tried looking for error logs in %appdata%StardewValley/ErrorLogs but the ErrorLogs folder doesn't even exist - I only have DisconnectLogs and Saves.

I believe that's an XNA error (one of the frameworks the game uses). I don't know that there's a fix on the devs' end unfortunately, XNA is just very picky about audio devices. You can try playing with SMAPI and no mods and see if that helps any.

I was playing completely vanilla - no mods and no SMAPI at all. I'm not familiar with SMAPI - how might it help me in this situation if it's a framework issue?

That would make sense. It's unfortunate, as I found this out when my bluetooth headphones disconnected from my desktop suddenly (they died) and then I went to try and swap the audio output to some wired headphones. When I returned to SV it was frozen.

I'm honestly not sure if it would, but it has more robust error logging so it would be easier to tell what's going wrong, and it has save backups in case of save file corruption.

Hey, this has been happening to me too! ConcernedApe mentioned in this thread earlier this year that the game can't switch audio after it's been started, which I've noticed in the past; BUT: pre-update, the audio would just go out and the game was still playable. Since the 1.5 update, it crashes instead, I'm not sure why. I'm also playing completely vanilla, through Steam, no error logs just like you.

I've been trying to keep one of the earcups of my headset off a piercing that's healing and I keep accidentally turning them off lol, I've been crashing at the worst times! Might have to just suck it up and find a different headset until it's fixed.

I'm similarly affected with this newest patch. I previously posted about an issue when my controller goes to sleep and causes an issue. My workaround was to turn the controller off and back on and that seemed to prevent that problem. I initially thought that workaround just stopped working but realized my bluetooth audio was the cause this time.

Previously to the latest patch, the worst that would happen would be that the audio just wouldn't work until I had a chance to save and restart the game, now it just crashes.

Windows 10
Steam
Gave Version 1.5.1
Bluetooth Headset: Trekz Titanium
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (Just in case it matters)

Some things I've tried so far:

Turning off Steam Cloud saves in the properties for SDV on Steam (idr where I read this, but it was another older thread about audio issues)
Re-starting the computer (several times in between other steps)
Checking for updated audio drivers (there were some minor updates, but nothing drastic)
Using different headphones/speakers

Still the same issue

Windows 10 Education
Steam
SDV Version 1.5.1
Problem occurs when switching away from any audio output that I've tested

Glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue! When my headset gets low on charge, I turn it off and SV stops responding. For now, I'll be more vigilant of fully charging my headset beforehand, or using speakers.

Just chiming in to say this issue bit me too. It'd be nice to be able to switch audio devices too 😀

Yeeeeup this was horrible lol
Full day, GREAT luck in the mines, found some artifacts in dig spots, 12:30am I'm three steps from my bed and my bluetooth speaker dies.
...game froze.
:cry::defeated:
Well, at least I know what causes it, now.

I just ran into this bug. My HDMI audio device disconnected and turned off, and then the game locked up. Pretty frustrating.

I've played a lot of XNA games. This has never happened before.
