I have this issue where I want to leave my farm but the cat will sit there and not move, it will do the 'shaky-shake' animation, but not actually move. I had to leave from the other exit. I tried fixing that by adding a gated entrance, but then the cat just blocks the gate. Its annoying. He also constantly blocks my front door and to a lesser extent my bed sometimes he'll not be sleeping on it but sitting on it. I also have the issue where he sits on my chests making it so I interact with HIM instead of accessing the chest - VERY VERY annoying! There should be some boundaries you can set for the cat, or be able to confine them to a cabin/building/barn when you are busy or whatnot. I'd never EVER buy another pet, because the last thing I would want is yet another animal constantly blocking my path.
My workaround has been partitioning the entire farm into little subsections so my cat doesn't get past the first set, but it seems he can teleport. So, there is still a chance he will block me, so I had to double that and make two sets. Which is in of itself annoying because fences and walls crumble quite easily unless they are hardwood which is very scarce in the game even when you get a few from each tree (i get about 1 per 3 trees, sometimes I'll actually get 6 or 7, but thats VERY rare and only on 'lucky' days which I'd rather spend mining).
I am about to the point where I want to sprinkle butterfly dust but I dont want to spend THAT much money and it makes no sense if a pet costs a million dollars yet I have to PAY to get rid of him. You should make it so pets are WORTH money after about 3 or so hearts, and AT 3 hearts be sold for free, and 0-2 hearts have you have to PAY to get rid of them --this is basically how it works in the real world (though not hearts but breeding papers, breed purity, but yeah same idea)
