I had several pets (4 pets, 1 adopted dog, 2 adopted cats and 1 original pet cat) in the game and after a while I used butterfly powder on the adopted pets so they're gone. I noticed that after a in gamenday in the game, it's not displaying the correct pet icon but the name is correct (name of the remaining pet). It displays a dog instead of the cat I have.
