Each time I upgrade a tool it ends up in the Town Lost & Found within a couple in-game days. I am never passed out and I check all of my chests. They just disappear from my backpack and end up in Lost & Found back at their basic Model. I can't even keep an axe upgraded long enough to get to the Secret Woods.
