Is there a way to remove the baby play pen in the first housing upgrade?

I assume you mean the baby crib thing in the corner of the nursery room. You can remove it, you just need to go to Robin's and have her remove it, she does it for free. You have to select "House Renovations" when you talk to her.

I will additionally add, to do so, you must have either no children at all or have any children you do have be out of the phase where they'd be using it (I think that's about a month from birth?)

If you have a child using it the game doesn't allow it
