Are the multiplayer characters related?

Me and my friends noticed the facial similarity between the multiplayer characters, we work on the same farm, we can all summon grandpa. Are the characters related? And if yes, how? Are we brothers, cousins, or what?

I don’t think so, because you can marry each other. Maybe you’re all just friends? Family friends? That would explain the grandpa thing.

My understanding is that only the farmer (the host and player that lives in the farm house) has a grandfather. The other players are farmhands and are in no way related to the farmer or the farmer's grandfather. I know their are letters in game that indicate otherwise, but to me these feel like oversights. That's just my opinion on it though.
