Creator Response Animal and building tiles at the start of the game

Hi all,

I'm a bit confused about the barn and coupe tiles when you set up the game. The instructions say to make two stacks one for barn and one for coupe and put the animals underneath the tiles. It says then to pick two random building tiles and put them next to those two stacks and put the rest back in the box.

Does that mean I own these buildings from the beginning of the game? Or do I still have to spend resources to buy a barn and coop? The same goes for the animal tiles that are underneath the coop and barn tile. Do I own those automatically as well?

Thanks.

From what I can tell from reading the rules, is that you can only build the four buildings you placed on the left side of the board (the coop, the barn, and 2 random buildings).

You don't start with those built, you have to spend an action while at the mountain to buy the buildings from Robin for their listed cost.

Hence why the rules explaining the Buy Animals action stipulates that you can buy them "once you have the building they require."

I believe the reason for this is to make it where the two random buildings create more variety in games. (Same reason there are different Grandpa Goals and different Bundles and different Season Cards, etc)

Okay that makes sense. What about the building titles that are left over after setting up the game? Are those unavailable or can those be used as well?

I believe the intent is that they will be unavailable for that game. Otherwise, what would be the point of laying out only 4 at the start? (Unless they replenish like fish do? maybe? But, I didn't see anywhere in the rules that it said that, so I don't think that's the intent)

Okay I'll go with that.

My understanding from reading the rules and playing through the game once is that picking two random buildings means there's variation in the buildings "in stock" at the Carpenter's shop each game. The barn and coop are always available, and then two other random buildings. The other buildings simply won't be available for that game, but you may randomly pick them next time.

I suspect they wanted to have most or all the buildings from the video game in the board game, but allowing more to be available during one playthrough could lead to an unbalanced game. I will also note that other tiles have a mechanic where you can bring more into the game under certain conditions. I didn't see anything during playing that talked about unlocking additional buildings for purchase, but I also haven't read all the cards.

Thanks for the info. And players do need to purchase the barn and coop? They're not automatically part of your barn when the game starts?
