Accidentally picking up/destroying gates and fences

Can we please fix the fact that gates and fences can be picked up or destroyed by clicking on them when no tool is highlighted? I just destroyed a piece of fence from horseback when I was trying to open up the gate. I had no tools selected, and it demolished the piece of fence next to the gate! Now I have to run across my farm to go and grab another piece of fence to replace it, which delays the entire series of things I have planned for the day. It's rather tiresome that these things keep happening.

This would be nice, I regularly break my gates (although those are easier to put back in place).

I've done this a few times, gates more often, too. And as @Odin said, at least gates are easier to replace because they can be put right back down. The fence posts, however, are gone. Any way to prevent that would be wonderful.
