1.5 Mines question

Does anyone know if Qi Gems will still drop from monsters in the Mines if the Shrine of Challenge is set to 'dangerous' but you *don't* have the Danger In The Deep quest active? Is Danger In The Deep even repeatable if I've completed it once? (Mr. Qi's other quests seem to be.) I can't seem to find an answer on the wiki.

All of Qi's quests can be done multiple times.

I get qi gems after the quest is done and the challenge shrine is working. They seem to drop more often during the quest, but I'm not certain of this.
