pet adoption bug

I am currently playing a multi-player split screen with no mods. Occasionally the game glitches and items in the mine can't be picked up. We have to leave the mine and start over. In addition we had our pet one day and was gone the next.

Playing on the x box and I bought the pet catalog from Marnie, was able to adopt a turtle. Went home realized my cat was missing so decided to come back to adopt another pet and now the option to adopt is gone. I even tried buying the catalog again but the option is simply gone.
