cannot be painted

It's been a while since I've last played but I remember being able to paint my house and other farm buildings. I'm playing on multiplayer and my mates are able to change the appearance of their cabins, paint the stable, and change the pet bowl but everything else that we have we can't paint...

If you click on an unpaintable building more than once, the message repeats in a different place. Maybe this is intentional, I don't know.
