I was thinking about your spouse recently, and while I think the 14 heart events are really cool, it would be especially neat to play a deeper role in their ongoing development, and they could help you in exchange.
For example, imagine if Abigail could come along with you into the mines? However, she would start out at level one, so if you brought her into the deep mines right away, she would do very little damage and get taken out fairly quickly.
I'm thinking that she would be limited in what level of weapons and stuff she could use based on her own character level, which would actually give you a compelling reason to use some of the low and mid-tier weapons, which are often neglected. You'd bring her various things to level her up over time.
Other spouses could offer different benefits, in exchange for different requests. For example, Emily might request extremely large quantities of gemstones, with which she would slowly enhance her Crystal garden, and over time she would gain the ability to give you different blessings or bonuses which would last throughout the day.
Penny, alternatively, might start her own small garden and slowly become better and better as a gardener. She might give you produce from her garden, and the higher level she gets, the more frequently and effectively she could water your crops as well, or pet your animals.
Some of the other spouses are a little trickier. Haley, for example, has her photography thing, and Emily has her art thing, but neither of those seem to directly impact the player as significantly. Though for Haley, perhaps you could bring her various items and she can do a portfolio on a certain part of your farm, and from then on that part gets a bonus to their value? This could be a fun way to make different crops more interesting, like if you could get +50 gold for Garlic or for Pumpkins or something, maybe she gives you two choices and you can pick one.
