My advise is to utilize chests outside your farm. Like in the image below.
Top left: Skull cavern
Top right: Mines (also mountain lake fishing)
Bottom left: Clint's
Bottom right: Ocean
General idea: you put in to the chest the things you do not need for the activity (mining, fishing). After said activity put things you do not need to bring with you (or cannot) and get back the things you want to bring with you or bring home. This is very important especially in early game mining and fishing with no bag upgrades. But even with full bag upgrade, this is still useful.
