PC BUG- Animals don't gain hearts

On my PC game, none of my animals will gain hearts. I have made sure to do everything you are supposed to do. I'm on year two and my chickens from year one still don't have hearts. Even my new cows don't have any. Probably just going to start over at this point honestly because I can't progress much.

Can you explain what you mean by "do everything you're supposed to do"?

Are they happy when you talk to them or does it say they are grumpy or thin?

Do you have any mods?

One thing people sometimes miss is that you have to take hay out of the hopper and place it onto the bench (as shown below), otherwise the animals won't be able to eat it.
