What is the trick to fishing?

I feel like I’m going to do this whole game without fishing. I caught one once early on but now it’s so frustrating I never do it. I cast the line and hear a brr brr sound so I hit Y hoping to get the word hit and the minigame. Instead the line just comes up out of the water. Or I try to wait and hit y right when I hear that noise but nothing no hit! No minigame. I have the useless training rod and I try to look for bubbles but it never works. I want to do the community center but I can’t get fish or even get the minigame to try to get better at it. All the online tutorials are for once the minigame starts but not how to get it to start. I am so so frustrated with this.

Do you see a ! pop up over your head when you hear the sound? You need to click when you hear the sound and the ! pops up. In the options menu you can change what the fishing sound sounds like.

went and checked... you can't use "Y" to catch a fish. so using your mouse (left click) will probably solve all your problems!

additional help...
first, the fishing game at the fair in the fall is a really great way to practice landing the fish after you hook them, they're all easy fish, and it's a fun way to get some fair tokens without gambling!
second, crab pots give fishing experience, so make a few and let them help you to get enough fishing xp to get an iridium rod
third, barbed hooks and lead bobbers are like training wheels for your fishing rod! any lure that slows down the fish escaping or enlarges the fishing bar will give you more time to land that fish.

fishing personally is my favorite skill in stardew, first skill I maxed

You really have to have good timing to do well in fishing, don't rely on sound, rely on when the exclamation mark comes onto screen

Switch uses the Y controller button to Cast the rod and also to grab the Fish once it bites. One thing I noticed when using the Switch is there is a small but annoying delay when using the controllers wirelessly which became imperceptible when they were docked to the main Switch body. If the OP isn't using the controllers docked, they could try that out. However most people are using them docked so this probably won't help.

It sounds like their game is bugged as I've played SDV on Mac, PC, phone, tablet, and Switch and the Fishing minigame didn't seem to play much differently on any of them other than ergonomic differences.

The Traveling Cart Lady will eeeevvveeeennnntualllyyy sell all regular map Fish (but not Legends or Mines or Ginger, except Ghostfish) and you can finish the Community Center that way but it's a long game of chance (not sure if game-seed based). So probably best to learn to Fish and fix bugs like the OP unfortunately seems to be having.
