Playing multiplayer with a friend, it's possible to skip the quest to reach level 40 in the mines by taking the elevator to a level unlocked by your farmhand.
When getting to the bottom, my farmhand got the skull key, and now has the quest to find out what the skull key is for.
This quest did not show up for me, because the pre-requisite quest to reach level 40 was not completed.
I backtracked to level 40, got that quest, then went to the bottom to complete the next quest, and the skull key quest is still not showing up.
