I often find myself writing things down on notepad while playing, to set myself a to-do list or write down townsfolk's favourite gifts so adding it into the game would prove a useful addition so as to not have to keep switching tabs, or remember lots of things. I think an icon in the inventory could look like this.

Why It's not already in the game... This game is all about planning and there's a lot of activities... Minecraft has Book and Quill and it used to help me so much! This idea was not implemented in 1.5, but let's hope it's going to appear on 1.6 maybe... I believe It's a must feature.
