As soon as I give my gift to my secret buddy the game crashes in between cut scenes. I am on the current version of the game. It’s happened 3 times.

This is a known issue. It is typically seen when you have unlocked Ginger Island but haven't got enough friendship with the NPC there for him to move to Pelican Town. Many people have reported being unable to give him a gift and the game crashing when they try to leave without doing so. It is possible that, if your secret friend is not Leo that you are his secret friend... and because he's not there, the game crashes. Have you checked your save file with the Checkup to see if Leo is your gift giver?
