I also despise the rainbow fish for the same reasons. Ugh that book. I also hate the giving tree with its parable of the continually self-sacrificing mother. I usually love Shel Silverstein otherwise.
On the other hand, I love Neil Gaiman’s The Wolves in the Walls. Just the right amount of scary for younger kids.

I almost listed that one. It is so creepy and not at all a healthy portrait of familial love.
