Mixed Seeds?

Hey guys! I've been playing Stardew Valley for a while now and have been seeing some posts about mixed seeds. They are extremely confusing to me, so can someone explain? I think when you plant them they produce foragables for that season, but I've seen posts saying that they can grow to be plants (like ones you can buy from Pierre and Joja) ?!? Every time I plant mixed seeds it's mostly in winter, which might be why they only produce foragables. Can anyone clear this up for me?

There is a difference between mixed seeds and wild seeds.

Mixed seeds will grow into a random crop of the season.
Wild seeds will grow into forage items.

I didn't think you could plant mixed seeds in winter, but if you can they probably turn into wild seeds since that is the only thing that grows in winter.
