Community Question: What is your profession?

Hello everyone, the ole gaming wizard here. I have another burning question for the community. Something to help everyone get to know one another!

What is your line of work, your profession?

Are you a chef, welder, IT employee, military? What do you do for a living?

I'll begin! I work for my cities Parks and Recreation department as a Grounds Maintenance employee!

What do I do?:
I maintain parks with a crew and general maintenance. We cut grass, repair machinery that we use, paint, powerwash, clean parks, etc.

Feel free to add to what I posted on yours, can't wait to see the wide range of jobs we all do from day to day!

I'm in tech, but about 6 months out from 17 years as a college-level writing instructor. In my current job, I do a little bit of everything--coding, customer support, code analysis, client training--but my title is "lead accessibility auditor," since my main task is to analyze client websites for how well they adhere to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, the standards that are generally used to determine if a site is accessible under laws like the Section 508 and the ADA in the US, or EN 349 501 in Europe. Day to day, that means going through websites using the keyboard, screen readers, and with automated tools to check the HTML and user experience.

Edit: had to revise how long I've been in my new job . . . it's been way longer than 3 months since January. Dang pandemic.

That's pretty interesting! Do you enjoy your career?

I am 1 year retired from a 41-year career teaching physics to Deaf college students. I used to have a huge "lab" on Second Life where students could go to recreate in-class lab work, work together whenever, I could meet them at any time... I spent years putting it together. That was the start for me of interest in virtual worlds, even those as simple as Stardew Valley. So much fun.

Oh wow, that sounds like a long career! I assume you enjoyed it?

I am a barista at Dunkin Donuts. :)
It's not a profession, or career but it's a better job that I had. Lol
Nothing wrong with that. How do you like it?

LOVED. IT. I was preparing for a new semester, feeling fine, and a voice said "It's time to stop." And it was. I loved my colleagues, I loved my students, I loved the job. But it was just time to stop.
That's awesome. I love anyone who teaches and loves it themselves. It makes learning from them easier and exciting. They seem to teach differently... more passion. But that's what I would want. A career I can enjoy and gives me some satisfaction knowing I'm doing my best and loving every minute of it.

I'm a shelver at the library and an artist. It’s been pretty hard being in quarantine. We’re finally going back to the building in small groups to process returns and next week our curbside pickup is going to roll out. I was going to be at the Chalk Art Festival and the Denver Zine Fest this year and all that got cancelled too. Normally I’d be working on summer displays for the library with my friend I work with, thankfully I’ve been able to do a little of that at home. I also really just enjoy putting books away, I’m very grateful for my job, I just really hope we get opened up to the people again one day....

That's very awesome. I used to be an artists (appreciated but unpaid), I could draw, mold or paint anything. But art teachers in school, and people using me for it, kind of made me give it up.
As for being a shelver at a library, also awesome! I love books and reading. That would be a dream job, or working in a book store.

I used to be in the military, I served 4 years in the Army and I did 1 tour (Iraq) for the most part those 4 years set me up with some financial success as well educational benefits.

Before all this COVID-19 mess, I was in Security but, being laid off really was a blessing in disguise, to be honest, I really really, I mean really got tired of my job and It was really affecting me. Sure It's seen as free, easy money but.. Meh It's no longer worth it, so I'm seeing things from a different view now. I'm focusing on school now and once things open up, I plan on attending a CC and going for my 2year in Kinesiology (technical term for "working out") and hopefully land in that industry (Personal Trainer/Group Instructor) would be the goal.

An alternative Is to go your path Jack, I wouldn't mind working for Parks and Rec. I love the outdoors and being physically active.

Very nice, I respect the military background myself. I joined the Military as well. I was an HT [Hull Maintenance Technician] and it involved welding and other various maintenance tasks.

Sounds great, I'm glad you're heading in that path now. I went to college as well, I earned a degree in Welding Technologies. But it never panned out for me. Hard to find an apprenticeship.

It's not so bad, but I want a career instead of a job. I feel this is the latter, and not the former. It can be fun, and i work with some good people. I suppose perspective plays a huge role in finding that career path.

I'm glad there more prior military people here, I have yet to go anywhere with the military.(I was suppose to PCS but the corona happened) I wanted to know more about your experiences, I think about staying in cause I like the financial stability and "job". I'm in the air force what branch where you in? Sorry for all the questions

It's understandable. The financial stability, paired with the benefits, definitely makes one consider reenlistment. lol

I was in the Navy. And it's fine! It's what the topic is all about! Sharing professions and asking questions.

Profession? A Spartan warrior!
Well, I assume you're a competent warrior since you're speaking with us right now. Well done, and GLORY FOR SPARTA!!!

That's pretty neat! How many years did you serve?

I was a 92A (Logistics aka Warehouse) and 88M (Truck Driver) but, like you sir It didn't pan out afterwards because I wasn't really into those MOS. After I got out I didn't chase those jobs, In fact when I got out I was a complete mess.(But, that's a whole different story I'm willing to share later.)

It's a shame you couldn't find an apprenticeship. But, I do commend you on your job. I've seen the horrible conditions people leave the parks in, the bathrooms 🤢🤮 the graffiti, etc. Keep up the good fight sir!

Same, I love having more military people. We just need a Marine to complete the collection, maybe we will get a :stardrop: hehe. I wouldn't blame you for reenlisting, especially with the current times, I'm out.. I've been out for 10 years, I'm enjoying the Veteran status and life haha.

Where are you currently stationed at?

@Beaker: I only did one term. I wish it would've been longer.

Yeah I knew a few guys, and gals, who were logistics specialists and what not. Depending on where you are [stationed/deployed to], it can be dangerous. Either way, I commend you!
And believe me, I was the same. I did ruin a good portion of my 20s that I'm still recovering from. I understand.

Yes, my friend. Its pretty nasty sometimes. First month on the job I was rubbing graffiti off the skate park walls for like 2 hours solid. It stretched about 50 feet in length.

I been in Texas my whole career so far, which is not so bad my family lives here too, but I'm supposed to PCS to England after the virus cools down. I feel like my job doesn't translate too well to the civilian word being aircraft maintenance. Still don't really have a plan yet for when I get out, I should just in case.....

You been out for some long!! Even if it was four years thanks for your service. My husband is also prior service he's enjoying it a lot too.
