Right now the animals can only feed on grass or hay. I think it would be great if you could purchase a trough from Marnie or build your own and stock it with things like corn or other vegetables, or a 'slop' that you can create from a mixture of vegetables, fruits & grains. The trough could be placed indoors as well as outdoors so the animals have better food to eat in the winter and on rainy days. This mod could also allow the farmer to directly feed an animal an ear of corn, cave carrot, etc., as well. Note: Paritee's Treat Your Animals supposedly had the ability to feed your animals directly but it doesn't appear to work anymore; I've tried the unofficial update but it doesn't seem to do anything.
