Mining is probably my favorite activity to do in the game, since I'm such a fan of geology and have been collecting minerals since I was 4. I thought up of a list of new things we could see in the Mines and Skull Caverns and new things for mining and materials in general.
Giant Ore Rocks
We see those massive boulders in the Mines and Skull Caverns that are tough and drop lots of stone when broken. What if there were giant rocks filled with ore? Giant ore rocks would appear in both the Mines and Skull Caverns and could contain all types of ore from copper to iridium. When broken, the rock would give anywhere from 10-15 ore. To break a giant ore rock your pickaxe must be as good or better than the ore the rock has, meaning you can't break a giant gold ore rock with an iron pickaxe. They would however be fairly rare. Giant copper, iron, and gold rocks can be found in the regular Mines and Skull Caverns. Giant iridium ore rocks will only be found in the Skull Caverns after level 30 and would still be a hard thing to find.
Giant Geode Rocks
Giant Geode rocks would appear in both the Mines and Skull Caverns and would drop 5-8 geodes when broken. A regular giant geode rock requires a copper pickaxe to break, a giant frozen geode rock requires an iron pick to break, giant magma geode rocks require a gold pickaxe to break and giant omni geode rocks require an iridium pickaxe. And like with giant ore rocks, they'll be fairly rare.
Giant Gem Rocks
Giant Gem Rocks would appear in both the Mines and Skull Caverns, requiring at least an iron pickaxe to break them. Giant Diamond Rocks however will require at least a gold pickaxe. When broken they will drop 4-6 gems. They will be much harder to find than giant geode or giant ore rocks.
Giant Coal Rocks
Giant coal rocks will appear in both the Mines and Skull Caverns, requiring at least a copper pickaxe to break them. When broken they will drop 8-12 coal. They will be harder to find than regular boulders.
Dune Duggy
The Skull Caverns variant of the Duggy found in the earlier levels of the Mines. Dune Duggies live in the sand and will pop up to attack the player. Dune Duggies are not only faster than regular duggies, they can sometimes inflict a "bleeding" debuff which will take away 1 health point every second for 5 seconds. As annoying as they are, they have a chance to drop very valuable items; pumpkins, gold ore, gold bars, mega bombs, diamonds, and even lucky lunches.
Iridium Bomb
A bomb that is specifically meant to fight monsters but can also destroy rocks. The blast radius is the same as a regular bomb but does a cluster bomb effect, causing 3 explosions one after the other and inflicts great damage to monsters. Great for taking out groups of slimes or any kind of monster. This bomb can also be used to kill Armored Bugs. To craft the iridium bomb, you need 4 iridium and 1 coal, or you can buy them from Dwarf for 2500 gold a piece.
Mine Carts
No, not the ones we use for fast travel. On some levels in both the Mines and Skull Caverns we see mine carts filled with coal and the tracks lead sometimes all the way through. What if we could ride mine carts through levels where they are present. When in the mine cart we are protected from non-flying monsters like slimes, rock crabs, mummies, etc. This could allow us to more quickly travel through the level and scope out the area. When in a mine cart however, you can not mine rocks or attack monsters, its more of a safe way to look around or even escape if you are low on health.
Blast Furnace
A blast furnace will cut the time of smelting bars in half. To build a blast furnace you will need 20 gold ore and 75 stone.
Skipping Tool Upgrades
This is something I've wanted for quite awhile. The play style I usual do is hit the mines as hard as possible to get copper and iron to make sprinklers for Summer and then hit them even harder to get materials to make quality sprinklers by Fall. I always upgrade my pickaxe and axe first to gather materials quickly, my hoe and watering can typically get the short of the upgrade stick. By the time I get the materials needed for what I want to do, I have a huge surplus of iron and sometimes even gold. Why can't I just skip the copper upgrade if I have the materials and money for an iron watering can? Why do I need to waste copper bars on a tool that I'm just going to upgrade again immediately? If we have it, we should be able to do it.
Bombs Should Destroy Large Boulders, Stumps and Hardwood Logs
I think bombs should be able to destroy the large rocks we see in the Mines and on our farms and should be able to destroy the hardwood stumps and logs. Explosives are actually a fairly common way of removing tree stumps from yards or other wooded areas. Quick and usually very affective.
Pay Clint to Smelt Bars For You
We pay Clint to break open geodes and upgrade tools, why not pay him to smelt bars for you if you're lacking in furnaces or don't have any coal? Say you have have 10 bars worth of ore but only 2 furnaces, you could pay Clint to smelt them for you. 50 gold per copper bar, 75 gold per iron bar, 200 per gold bar and 400 per iridium bar. You simply choose how many bars you would like to smelt and pay the total fee. Paying Clint to smelt bars for you does not mean an instant smelt, it will require to same time it takes if you were smelting them in your own furnace. When your bars are done smelting you will receive a message telling you "Your (number) Copper Bars Are Done Smelting" the same way Clint tells you your tool is ready to be picked up. Bars do not have to be picked up the same day and Clint cannot smelt bars for you when he is working on a tool.
Rock Tumbler Machine
Basically a cask for minerals. There are different qualities of minerals and gemstones in real life, a diamond can be worth a few dollars to a few million dollars based on various quality factors. Rock tumbler machines can be used to improve the quality of any kind of mineral in the game, gemstones, diamonds, minerals from geodes and even prismatic shards. Minerals from regular geodes will take 1 week to reach iridium star, minerals from frozen geodes take 2 weeks, minerals from magma geodes and gemstones take 3 weeks, diamonds take a full season and prismatic shards take 2 full seasons. To craft a Rock Tumbler Machine you will need 1 diamond, 1 battery, 5 iron, 50 stone.
